Leeds City and its workings
The joint LNWR & NER station was originally called "Leeds New", the later name of "Leeds City" included the ex-MR station "Wellington St." alongside.
New additions placed here temporarily
Passenger services from Leeds City were a combination of local Ordinary Passenger trains in all directions and Expresses to York, Harrogate and Newcastle. This is an example of a York-Leeds express headed by a recently-built B1 No 1034 (Tweedmouth). It's an example of a secondary 5-set of which many in the NE region were modernised from non-gangwayed to newly-built Gresley 61'6" carriages, without catering, of course (more details will follow under "Secondary Expresses"). A marvellous but undated view of A3 No 60077 The White Night leaving the station with an unidentified express, the coaches in carmine & cream.
"1955" has been added in a different hand on the back but the loco livery is post-1957 and it's after Neville Hill gained ex-LMS Ivatt 2-6-2Ts to serve as station pilots in 1958. The Pacific was a Heaton loco until February 1960 so a reasonable date for the photograph would be 1958-59. The sun angle tallies with the 11am Liverpool-Newcastle about to take the "Leeds Northern" route. Photo: RK Blencowe Negative Archive.

Believed to be a pre-1933 view when C7 No 2198 had its Westinghouse brake removed and in 1934, was allocated to Neville Hill, seen here with an eastbound train, probably from Liverpool to Newcastle or Hull. Catering was provided - restaurant cars and buffet cars and some of the formations were LMS and hauled to Leeds by its locos but alas, the carriages cannot be seen. Photo: SLS No 1745.

Ex-NER G5 No.E7274 (Neville Hill) was captured at Leeds City station in 1948 with a local train although it's impossible to tell which of the three routes would have been taken: towards Wetherby, Selby or Castleford via Kippax. The BR period would see a decline in these Leeds Outer Suburban services and abandonment, despite arrival of the DMU, and many years later, a certain regret. Photo: Author's collection.

A few years later G5 No 67274 is seen again in the station, on Thursday 11th October 1956 at the west end in its second, BR mixed traffic livery without a full set of pilot lights, the photographer penning that the loco "moves down the through road to dispose of empty stock brought down from FARNLEY carriage sidings". Now routed the through Wetherby, a Newcastle-Liverpool express draws into Leeds City behind A3 No 60088 Book Law. The date is not known but all the stock, Gresley and BR Mk.1, is carrying the post-1957 maroon livery. 1961-63 is likely when the loco was at Heaton and Gateshead.
The strengthener behind the tender is a late 1930s Gresley TK built on the steel angle underframe and it looks like the roof was recently painted with white lead, or simply a very pale version of grey? Photo: Kenneth Field.

Peppercorn A1 No 60131 Osprey spent ten years at Copley Hill working expresses to King's Cross and when it closed, was dispersed to Ardsley and, in 1963, to Neville Hill whose cleaners have made a fine job of preparing it for an RCTS special.
The "Tyne-Solway Rail Tour" ran on 21st March 1965 from Leeds-Newcastle (via the Leeds Northern line)-Carlisle-Leeds with a visit to the shed at Gateshead - and the same loco was in charge the whole day. The load was a surprisingly light one of six coaches - hard to imagine, eh? Snow had fallen overnight and hopes had been high for a snow-covered double crossing of the Pennines but, alas, none was to be seen. Photo: Gavin Morrison.

A4s from Gateshead were occasional vistors to Leeds City but Sunday 19th September 1965 saw Aberdeen A4, No 60004 William Whitelaw awaiting departure with an RCTS special "The Blyth-Tyne express". Photo: Steve Banks.
